India officially the Republic of India (Hindi: ???? ???????, Bharat Ga?arajya; see also the official names of India), is a country in South Asia comprising a mainland on the Indian subcontinent, the Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and numerous other smaller islands in the Indian Ocean. Bounded by the Arabian Sea on the southwest and the Bay of Bengal on the southeast, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west; the People's Republic of China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast; and Burma and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; via the Andaman and Nicobar Islands it shares a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia. With 2.3% of Earth's land surface, India is the seventh-largest country by geographical area. With over 1.2 billion citizens, it is the second-most populous country and the world's most populous democracy.
